Dr. James Elder, York University
Principal Investigator

Dr. James Elder’s research focuses on improving machine vision systems through better understanding of biological visual processing. He has won awards and honours, including the Premier’s Research Excellence Award, Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society. He is a Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Department of Psychology at York University; Director of the NSERC CREATE Training Program in Data Analytics and Visualization; member of Centre for Vision Research (CVR); and core member of Vision: Science to Applications (VISTA).  

Dr. Gunho Sohn, York University
Co-Investigator

Dr. Gunho Sohn is an Associate Professor, Geomatics Engineering. His research focuses on photogrammetric computer vision methods for reconstructing and augmenting large‐ scale urban spaces from laser and optical point clouds. Dr. Sohn has served as a working group co-chair in 3D scene analysis for the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, leading international benchmark experiments in 3D city modelling. Over the last five years, Dr. Sohn has published over 40 peer-reviewed publications, filed two patents, received seven academic paper/presentation awards and held successful research grants from NSERC, OCE, GEOIDE, and other sources totalling over $1M. Dr. Sohn also serves as Undergraduate Program Director for the Geomatics Engineering Program at York University.  

Dr. Petros Faloutsos, York University

Dr. Faloutsos’ research is in the area of Digital Media with a focus on computer graphics, virtual human simulation, visualization-based feedback for speech pathology interventions, and computer mediated surgical training. His research has been cited over 8,000 times, and he received the ACM SIGCOMM Test of Time Award in 2010. He is an Associate Editor for two major international journals. Dr. Faloutsos is a Member of the ACM and an Affiliate Scientist with the Toronto Rehab Institute.  

Dr. John L. Lewis, University of Waterloo
Co-Investigator

Dr. John Lewis, is an Associate Professor at School of Planning, University of Waterloo. Dr. Lewis’ research specializes in computer-based environmental visualization for urban planning and design with a focus on geodesign software evelopment. Dr. Lewis currently leads the Urban Futures Partnership with the City of Waterloo, holds three geodesign patents and is the CEO/CTO of Vidya Inc, a geodesign software development and consulting firm based in Waterloo, Ontario. In addition to his geodesign research, Dr. Lewis is an advisor to the Ontario Seniors’ Secretariat, the Accessibility Directorate and five Ontario communities on accessible planning, universal and age-friendly community design.

Dr. Liping Fu, University of Waterloo

Dr. Liping Fu, P.Eng., FCECE, is a Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Waterloo. Dr. Fu has a long track record of research contributions to the areas of intelligent transportation systems, public transit, road safety, and winter road maintenance. Dr. Fu holds one international patent and several software copyrights including a routing and scheduling system and a web application currently being used by Transport Canada for safety analysis of highway- railway grade crossings. He has been the principal investigator of a larger number of projects funded by NSERC, OCE, Transport Canada, Ministry of Transportation Ontario, City of Edmonton, Oakville, Toronto, Region of Waterloo, Go Transit, and many industrial partners. He was the past Chair of Transportation of Division of Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and recipient of Transportation Association of Canada (TAC)’s 2011 Academic Merit Award sponsored by Transport Canada for his long-term contribution to the advancement of the academic field and to the development of tomorrow’s transportation leaders.
